“Behind the Flame”: Documentary photography by Nikos Zikos
The Athens Olympic Museum, being a constant beacon of the Olympic values and the Olympic ideal, on the occasion of the Olympic Games in Tokyo, hosts the third solo photo exhibition by Nikos Zikos entitled "Behind the Flame".The exhibition will run from July 31st, 2021, to October 18th, 2021 and will be hosted at the Educational Area (level 2 of the Museum). This breathtaking photography documentary brings to light moments of top, currently active, Greek athletes depicting their effort, pain, difficulties as well as their emotions towards the process of qualifying for the Olympic Games.
With the support of the Hellenic Olympic Committee and the help of the gymnastics champion Vasiliki Millousi, Nikos Zikos captured through his camera more than 25 athletes. Among those athletes were the still rings Olympic champion Lefteris Petrounias, the Olympic gold medalist in pole vault Katerina Stefanidis, the leading Greek cyclist Christos Volikakis, the table-tennis athlete Panagiotis Gionis, who has competed four times at the Olympic Games, the triple jumper Voula Papachristou, twice gold medalist at the European Athletics U23 Championships as well as Emilia Tsoulfa, Olympic gold medalist in 2004 who makes a comeback together with the 20-year-old Ariadne Spanaki to represent Greece in the 470 sailing category in Tokyo.
The photos of the exhibition are available at the album “Behind the Flame”, which is available for sale through the organization’s official e-shop http://behindtheflame.gr/. The amount collected from the sale of the album will be donated in the form of a scholarship to athletes competing at the Tokyo Olympics that have not received any sort of financial sponsorship or support.
The exhibition will operate daily from 10:00 to 21:00 at level 2 of the Museum and has free admission.
