Agon, an Olympic Legacy
The Athens Olympic Museum, a member of the International Network of Olympic Museums and a leading institution in Olympic education, is proud to announce its collaboration with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) for the design and implementation of a comprehensive educational and social initiative titled “Agon, an Olympic Legacy.” Exclusively funded by SNF, the program aims to promote and disseminate the values of Olympism while highlighting the deep connection between Sport, Culture, and Education.
The program will include the development of interactive educational installations and activities within the Museum’s permanent exhibition, as well as the creation of initiatives both inside the Museum and through its outreach programs.
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation, as part of its international philanthropic mission centered on people and the universal value of education and culture, supports the Museum’s efforts to broaden access to the history and philosophy of Olympism. Andreas Dracopoulos, President of SNF, stated:
"We are delighted to support the Athens Olympic Museum in bringing educational and social programs closer to people, both inside and outside the Museum. These programs promote and strengthen values such as our shared Olympic heritage and fair play, not only in sports but in all areas of life."
The SNF donation will fund the design and equipment of educational installations, the development of interactive sports simulation exhibits, the creation of inclusive and accessible activity materials, and the design of tools for implementing initiatives beyond the Museum space. Participants in the Agon program will have the opportunity to discover the history and values of Olympism and Agon—the two pillars of the program—through experiential learning, exploration, and interactive educational activities.
Agon is a broad initiative designed to engage multiple audiences across all age groups: children and students, young refugees, visitors with partial or total visual impairments, youth, families, older participants, those interested in experiencing the life of an Olympian or Paralympian, and visitors eager to explore the origins of Olympism. Activities will gradually begin from late 2021 through spring 2022.
Odysseas Athanasiou, CEO of Lamda Development, whose initiative and support led to the creation of the Athens Olympic Museum, commented on the collaboration:
"I warmly thank the Stavros Niarchos Foundation for its generous support, which strengthens the Museum’s mission to share the history and values of Olympism with an ever-widening audience, Greek-speaking and international, of all ages. SNF’s contribution is invaluable in fulfilling the Museum’s vision."
In just six months since its opening, the Athens Olympic Museum has already welcomed visitors of all ages from Greece, Europe, Asia, and the Americas. It has organized educational visits for school groups, young athletes’ clubs, and unaccompanied minors, and hosted its first Summer Camp.
With the implementation of Agon, an Olympic Legacy, the Museum continues to evolve, enhancing its educational mission and expanding accessibility to the cultural heritage of Olympism and its history through a wide range of activities both inside and outside the Museum.
