Alexandros Nikolaidis’ Medal

As a tribute to the achievements of Olympian Alexandros Nikolaidis, who passed away prematurely, the Athens Olympic Museum is honored to host his medal from the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
This invaluable donation is displayed in a specially designed case located in the "Athens 2004" gallery, alongside significant memorabilia from the 2004 Olympics—an event that marked a milestone in modern Greek history.
In accordance with Alexandros Nikolaidis’ touching final wish, his silver Olympic medals were auctioned and the proceeds donated to charitable organizations supporting children. After the auction, the medals were returned to his family, who generously offered his Athens 2004 Olympic medal to the Athens Olympic Museum for a five-year period. This allows visitors to admire it and be inspired by his achievements and moral integrity. The moving handover ceremony was attended by students and educators.
The medals and personal items of Olympians and Paralympians that adorn the Museum’s exhibition are a tribute to Greek athletes and rank among the most treasured exhibits. Through its Permanent Exhibition and various initiatives, the Museum aims to promote the principles and values of the Olympic Movement, and to inspire and motivate both younger and older generations to discover the history of sport and Olympism.
