Athens 2004 – Celebrating an Olympic Legacy
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the “ATHENS 2004” Olympic Games and during this Olympic year, the Athens Olympic Museum opens its Collection and transports visitors to the Opening Ceremony of the 28th Olympiad.
From July 22 to August 4, costumes worn by performers and set pieces from the Athens Olympic Museum’s Permanent Collection are presented to the public for the first time, in a unique exhibition journey that recreates the unforgettable night of the ATHENS 2004 Opening Ceremony, hosted on the ground floor of Golden Hall.
The anniversary exhibition is composed of eight themed stations, featuring costume compositions and scenic elements from the iconic “Clepsydra” segment of the Opening Ceremony. The dreamlike procession—featuring figures inspired by ancient frescoes, mosaics, sculptures, and Greek painting, created by Artistic Director Dimitris Papaioannou—takes visitors on a journey through unforgettable moments of Greek culture.
Also featured in the exhibition is the official Athens 2004 medal ceremony uniform worn by Voula Kozompoli, Olympic champion in water polo, kindly loaned by the athlete herself.
The journey through time continues at the Permanent Exhibition of the Athens Olympic Museum, where the ATHENS 2004 Games hold a special place. There, memories are enriched through authentic objects, personal testimonies, creators’ narratives, stories of Greek Olympians, and iconic moments from the Games.
